Cinema Growth

Cinema is booming - in Australia we enjoy one of the highest per capita cinema attendance rates in the world.

An increase of 3% on 2006 results has seen 2007 become the second highest grossing year on record for the Australian Film Industry.

West Australians have a strong affinity with the big screen, having spent over $94 million dollars going to the movies last year, so it’s no surprise that WA is leading the cinema-going charge with a massive 8% growth on 2006 figures.

As expected, the films released during the year lived up to lofty expectations, with franchises like Harry Potter, Shrek and Pirates of the Caribbean racking in well over $30 million each Australia-wide. 2007 will be remembered as a star studded blockbuster year, with big names, bigger blockbusters and even bigger results.

2008 looks certain to push the record books to new heights. In a similar fashion to last year, this year is sporting a stellar winter line up including blockbuster franchises like Indiana Jones, Batman and The Chronicles of Narnia.

Stage hit “Mamma Mia” will also make its big screen debut, while stars of the TV screen “Sex and the City” and “Get Smart” will be adapted into blockbuster feature films. Newcomers to watch out for are “Speed Racer”, brought to you by the Wachowski Brothers, the masterminds behind the Matrix Trilogy. The film showcases some amazing animated special effects never before seen on the silver screen. Also keep an eye out for the new animated family film “Kung Fu Panda” and the new Adam Sandler comedy “Don’t Mess With Zohan”.

Cinema goers will again be tantalised in 2008 with another year of blockbuster titles to delight young and old. Continue to watch this spot as records look set to be challenged again this year.
